Boating on the Umngot River
The signature Dawki experience is the boat ride on the transparently clear Umngot River. The water is so clean that you can see the riverbed up to 50 feet below, creating the famous "floating boat" effect. Boats are operated by local Jaintia fishermen and the ride lasts 30-45 minutes.
- Boat ride: ₹600-1,200 per boat (seats 4-5 people)
- Duration: 30-45 minutes upstream and back
- Best months: November-March for clearest water
- Photography tip: Morning light (8-10 AM) gives the best clarity
- Avoid: June-September when monsoon sediment reduces visibility
- The "floating boat" photos are best taken from the bridge above
Camping at Shnongpdeng

Shnongpdeng village, 15 minutes from Dawki, has emerged as Meghalaya's premier camping and adventure destination. Set on the banks of the Umngot River with dramatic cliff backdrops, it offers a range of adventure activities.
- Camping: Riverside tents from ₹800-1,500/person including meals
- Kayaking: 1-2 hours on the Umngot, ₹1,500-2,500/person
- Cliff jumping: 5-15 meter jumps into deep pools, free but at your own risk
- Snorkeling: Clear water visibility, equipment rental ₹500-800
- Zip-lining: Across the river gorge, ₹500-800/person
- Scuba diving: Seasonal, for experienced divers, ₹3,000-5,000
India-Bangladesh Border at Dawki
Dawki sits on the India-Bangladesh border, and the Dawki-Tamabil crossing is an active international border post. While you can't cross without a Bangladesh visa, you can visit the border area and see the Bangladesh flatlands stretching to the horizon from the Indian side. The contrast between Meghalaya's hills and Bangladesh's plains is striking.
How to Reach Dawki

Dawki is 81 km from Shillong, approximately 3 hours by road. The drive is scenic, passing through Jaintia Hills and descending dramatically to the river valley.
- From Shillong: Private cab ₹3,000-4,000 round trip, shared taxi ₹300-400/person
- Combo trip: Dawki + Mawlynnong in one day is the most popular route
- XTSY group tours include Dawki-Mawlynnong combo with transport and guide
- Road condition: Good highway for first 60 km, then narrower descent to Dawki
- Best departure time: Leave Shillong by 6-7 AM for the best morning light
