Backpacking India — 30-Day Itinerary, Real Budgets & Where to Sleep

A route that actually works: Delhi to Rajasthan, east to Varanasi, then the part most travellers miss — Meghalaya and the Northeast. Honest rupee costs, transport that exists, and hostel beds from ₹399 a night.

    The 30-Day Backpacking India Itinerary

Built around slow bases and budget-friendly overland hops rather than a new city every night. Cut the first half if you are short on time and fly straight into Guwahati for the Northeast leg.

    1. 1

      Days 1–3 · Delhi → Rajasthan

Land in Delhi, sleep in a dorm in Paharganj, then overnight sleeper to Jaipur or Jodhpur. Forts, street food, ₹1,200–1,500/day all-in.

    2. 2

      Days 4–8 · Rajasthan → Varanasi

Udaipur or Pushkar for slow days, then a sleeper train east to Varanasi for the ghats and evening aarti. Trains cost ₹400–900 in sleeper class.

    3. 3

      Days 9–13 · Varanasi → Guwahati

The classic hop east most backpackers skip. Train or a ₹3,000 budget flight into Guwahati (GAU) — the gateway to the entire Northeast.

    4. 4

Days 14–19 · Meghalaya (Shillong base)

Base at XTSY Travellers Hostel in Shillong from ₹399/night. Day trips: Dawki’s clear Umngot river, Nohkalikai Falls, Krang Suri, Mawlynnong, Umiam Lake, living root bridges at Nongriat.

    5. 5

      Days 20–25 · Meghalaya → Assam / Arunachal

Kaziranga for rhinos, Majuli river island, or push to Ziro Valley. Shared Sumos connect everything for ₹300–700 a leg.

    6. 6

Days 26–30 · South loop or fly out

Fly Guwahati → Goa/Kerala on a budget carrier for beaches and backwaters, or loop back to Delhi to close the circuit.

Budget Tips From People Who Live on the Route

    Realistic daily budget

₹1,200–₹1,800 a day covers a dorm bed, three meals, local transport and one paid activity. ₹2,500+ if you take private cabs.

    Best months

October–April for most of India. For Meghalaya, October–May is peak and June–September monsoon is the greenest, best budget-friendly and most dramatic.

    Book trains early

IRCTC opens 60 days out. Sleeper class is the backpacker default; 3AC if you want to sleep properly on long hauls.

    Solo & female safety

Stick to verified hostels with lockers, CCTV and female-only dorms. Meghalaya is matrilineal and among the safest states in India for solo women.

    Go east, not just north

Everyone does Goa–Rajasthan–Rishikesh. The Northeast is more affordable, emptier and the single best value region left in India.

    Base and day-trip

Instead of a new bed every night, base in one hostel for 4–6 days and day-trip out. More affordable, less exhausting, and unlocks long-stay discounts.

Where to Stay on the Northeast Leg

XTSY Travellers Hostel in Shillong is the Northeast’s largest backpacker hostel and the natural base for Meghalaya — every major sight is a day trip away.

Book Direct vs Hostelworld & Other OTAs

Hostelworld, Booking.com and Agoda charge us a 15–18% commission on every reservation — and that commission is priced into the bed you see. Booking direct at XTSY removes it and gives you a more flexible stay on top.

Booking & Deals — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything travellers ask before booking a bed: how far in advance to book, and how to get the best budget-friendly rate.

Do you need to book a hostel in advance in Shillong?

For dorm beds, 3–7 days ahead is enough outside peak. You do need to book in advance — ideally 2–4 weeks — for October to May, Christmas–New Year, Cherry Blossom Festival, Durga Puja and long weekends, and always for private rooms or Experience by XTSY. Booking in advance direct at xtsy.one/book also locks the lowest rate, since last-minute inventory is the most expensive.

How do I get the best hostel deals?

Five things move the price the most: (1) book direct instead of through Hostelworld or Booking.com so no 15–18% commission is priced in, (2) travel midweek — Sunday to Thursday beds are more affordable than Friday/Saturday, (3) stay 3+ nights to trigger the long-stay discount, (4) travel in the June–September monsoon shoulder when Meghalaya is greenest and rates are lowest, and (5) message us on WhatsApp before booking — we can often match or beat any OTA rate you have found.

Is it more affordable to book a hostel direct or on Hostelworld / Booking.com?

Direct is more affordable. OTAs charge the property a 15–18% commission that is built into the displayed rate, plus a booking deposit. Booking direct at xtsy.one gives you the same bed at the base rate, direct support from the XTSY desk, and free extras (late checkout on request, luggage storage, TAB Bistro breakfast discount) that OTA bookings do not include.

Are there group, long-stay or student discounts?

Yes. Groups of 6+ get a dedicated group rate and can block a whole dorm; stays of 7+ nights get a weekly rate; digital nomads and remote workers get a monthly work-from-hills package. Student and solo-female-traveller offers run seasonally — ask on WhatsApp at +91 88373 17070 before booking.

What happens if I need to cancel or change my dates?

The booking amount is non-refundable — there is no free cancellation. You can change your dates once within 90 days of the original check-in (ask at least 48 hours before), subject to availability and any rate difference — just WhatsApp us. OTA bookings follow that OTA’s policy.

Do I pay upfront when I book?

No prepayment is required on most dorm beds — pay on arrival by UPI, card or cash. Private rooms, Experience by XTSY, group blocks and peak-season dates take a partial advance to hold the inventory. Every direct booking gets an instant WhatsApp confirmation and a GST invoice.
