Motorbike expedition in Northeast India
Compare a gentle Meghalaya loop with longer rides to Tawang and Kohima. Daily distances are only one part of the plan: permits, altitude, fuel and daylight matter as much as the map.
Start with Meghalaya
The roughly 350 km Shillong–Dawki–Mawlynnong–Sohra loop works over 3–4 days. Roads are generally surfaced, with narrow village sections and blind bends on the Dawki descent. No ILP is required within Meghalaya.
Ride to Tawang
From Guwahati, the route via Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang covers roughly 520 km one way. Split the ascent to acclimatise before Sela Pass. Indian riders need an Arunachal ILP; foreign visitors must check protected-area requirements. Bumla needs separate local permission and is weather-dependent.
Kohima and riding essentials
The approximately 340 km Guwahati–Dimapur–Kohima route includes a slow hill climb after Dimapur. Arrange Nagaland entry requirements ahead of time. Bring licence, registration, insurance, protective gear and wet-weather layers; plan fuel and avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark.
