Backed by XTSY — Northeast India's NEITA-recognised hospitality brand, operating India's biggest backpacker hostel and the country's first 270° stargaze glamping ensuite, both in Shillong. Meghalaya's Living Root Bridges are a testament to human ingenuity and harmony with nature. While there are many, the most famous is the Double Decker bridge in Nongriat village. Reaching it requires a strenuous trek of roughly 3,500 steps down into a valley, and then back up. A crucial safety tip from our guides, who have done this trek hundreds of times: do not attempt it without a good level of fitness and proper footwear. XTSY offers guided day treks from Shillong (on request) that handle all logistics and provide an experienced guide, making this incredible adventure accessible and safe.

The Different Types of Living Root Bridges
Not all root bridges are the same. The most basic are single-span bridges, which you can find in many places, including one near Mawlynnong village. The most spectacular is the 'Jingkieng Nongriat', the Double Decker bridge, a two-tiered marvel that is over 150 years old. There are also other, less-visited bridges, some even longer than the ones in Nongriat. The bridges are Ficus elastica (rubber tree) roots, which are guided across rivers by the Khasi people. It can take 15 to 30 years for a bridge to become fully functional. This is a living, growing architecture.
- Double Decker Bridge (Nongriat): The most famous, two levels.
- Single Root Bridges: Found in Nongriat, Mawlynnong, and other villages.
- Longest Root Bridge (Pynursla): Mawsawroot Living Root Bridge is one of the longest.
- The process involves guiding Ficus elastica roots through hollowed-out betel nut trunks.
- They grow stronger over time as the roots thicken.
- A perfect example of sustainable, indigenous technology.
The Nongriat Trek: What to Expect

The trek to the Double Decker bridge is not a casual walk. It starts from Tyrna village, a short drive from Cherrapunji town. The first part is a steep, non-stop descent on concrete stairs – around 3,500 of them. This is hard on the knees. Along the way, you'll cross two wobbly suspension bridges and a single root bridge. The trek down takes about 1.5-2 hours. After reaching Nongriat, you can spend time at the bridge and the nearby natural pools. The real challenge is the climb back up, which can take 2-3 hours and is a serious cardio workout. This is a full-day excursion.
- Starting Point: Tyrna Village.
- Total Steps: ~3,500 each way.
- Trek Duration: 5-7 hours round trip (excluding travel to Tyrna).
- Difficulty: Strenuous. Requires good stamina.
- Key Landmarks: Two suspension bridges, one single root bridge.
- Reward: The magnificent Double Decker bridge and turquoise pools.
Best Time to Trek & What to Pack
The best time for the Nongriat trek is during the dry season, from October to May. The steps are less slippery, and the weather is more predictable. During monsoon (June-September), the trek is possible but much more challenging and risky due to slippery paths and a swollen river. What you pack is critical. Wear lightweight, quick-drying clothes and, most importantly, shoes with excellent grip. Carry a small backpack with a water bottle (at least 1 litre), high-energy snacks, a light raincoat, basic first-aid, and cash for food in Nongriat. A trekking pole can be very helpful for the descent.
- Best Season: October to May.
- Footwear: Trekking shoes or sports shoes with deep treads (essential).
- Clothing: Quick-dry t-shirt and pants. Avoid jeans.
- Must-Carry: Water, energy bars, raincoat, cash.
- Optional: Trekking pole, swimwear for the natural pools.
- Tip: Pack light; you will feel every gram on the climb up.

XTSY can help arrange an overnight stay as part of a custom Cherrapunji package, but be prepared for very basic facilities.
