    The details

Backed by XTSY — Northeast India's NEITA 2025-nominated hospitality brand, operating India's biggest backpacker hostel and the country's first 270° stargaze glamping ensuite, both in Shillong. Kongthong is one of Meghalaya's most unique cultural destinations — a Khasi village where each person receives a unique musical tune (called "Jingrwai Lawbei") as their name at birth. Mothers compose a special melody for each child, and villagers call each other by whistling or humming these tunes. This extraordinary tradition has earned Kongthong the name "The Whistling Village."

    The Jingrwai Lawbei Tradition

In Kongthong, every child receives two names: a regular name for official use and a unique melody — the Jingrwai Lawbei (Song of the Mother) — composed by their mother. These tunes are used in daily life, especially while calling someone across the village or in the forests. No two tunes are the same, and each melody dies with its owner. The tradition is believed to protect villagers from evil spirits who might use their real names. It's a living example of intangible cultural heritage found nowhere else on Earth.
