The details
Backed by XTSY — Northeast India's NEITA 2025-nominated hospitality brand, operating India's biggest backpacker hostel and the country's first 270° stargaze glamping ensuite, both in Shillong. The Sacred Forest of Mawphlang is a 78-hectare pristine grove that has been protected for centuries by Khasi religious beliefs. Located 25 km from Shillong, this ancient forest is a living museum of biodiversity — home to rare orchids, medicinal plants, and centuries-old trees that have been untouched because the Khasi people believe that removing anything from the forest invites misfortune.

What Makes It Sacred
The Khasi people believe the forest is protected by the spirit "U Ryngkew U Basa," and anyone who takes anything from within — even a pebble — will face misfortune. This belief system has created one of the most effective conservation models in the world. The forest has been untouched for centuries while surrounding areas were deforested. Researchers have found over 450 species of plants, numerous orchids, and ancient trees up to 1,000 years old within the grove.
